This is a study to determine risk factors for developing lung disease in children with sickle cell disease (SCD). Specifically we are researching factors that lead to the development of Acute Chest Syndrome, a pneumonia-like illness that affects many children with SCD.
Study Seeking Children / Adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease AND African American Children without Sickle Cell Ages 1-18: Examining Vitamin D Binding Protein
Official Title: Influence of Vitamin D Binding Protein on Total and Bioavailable 25 Hydroxyvitamin D in Sickle Cell Disease Children
We are doing this study to determine if kids with Sickle Cell Disease and African American kids without Sickle Cell Disease have a different amount of vitamin D binding protein (VDBP). VDBP carries vitamin D in the blood; vitamin D helps build strong bones.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of different birth control methods on bone health in young women with sickle cell disease. We need women who are taking birth control and those who are not.
