Assessing Breathing and Swallowing Coordination in People With Swallowing Problems After Stroke

Respiratory-Swallow Coordination for Chronic Dysphagia Following Cortical Ischemic Stroke
Purpose
To identify factors that contribute to swallowing problems following a stroke.
Participants will:
- Complete a swallowing questionnaire.
- Use tools that measure tongue strength and grip strength.
- Complete a simple breathing test by blowing into a small device.
- Complete an x-ray video swallowing test.
- Complete surveys about how swallowing affects their quality of life.
Time Commitment:
- One in-person session lasting approximately two hours.
Could this study be right for you?
- Greater than 6 months from a single stroke with no other neurological diagnosis
- Currently experiencing or reporting difficulty swallowing
- Consuming some degree of food intake; not fully reliant on a feeding tube
