Study of Pain Sensitivity and Responses to Alcohol

Pain Sensitivity, Alcohol-Induced Analgesia, and Heavy Drinking in Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to better understand how pain and related emotions change during sobriety and after drinking alcohol.
The length of the study is approximately 4 weeks and will include three on-campus lab visits at Ohio State's Medical Campus. The first lab visit includes screening and orientation with blood draw, EKG, and sensory tasks. The second and third lab visits include sensory tasks and intravenous alcohol or placebo (a saline solution) administration. The total time commitment of the study is approximately 17 hours.

Inclusion Criteria:
For this study, we are looking for people ages 21–65 who meet one of the following:
- Drink alcohol regularly
- Drink alcohol regularly and use opioids
- Occasionally drink alcohol and use opioids

Exclusion Criteria:
- Sensitivity to alcohol
- Current pregnancy
- Current or past diagnosis of mania or psychosis
