Understanding Stress and Alcohol Use in College-Aged Women

Official Title Examining the Role of Sensitivity to Uncertain Threat and Alcohol Response in Risk for AUD following Sexual Assault in College Women

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to better understand how stress relates to alcohol use in biological females aged 21-29. 

Participation in the study includes three in-person visits and the completion of daily phone surveys across 21 days while wearing a biosensor, which is similar to a Fitbit or smart watch. The first lab visit includes screening and orientation with blood draw, EKG, and sensory tasks. The second and third lab visits include sensory tasks and intravenous alcohol or placebo (a saline solution) administration. Participation in the study occurs over a period of 7 weeks.

Inclusion Criteria: 

  • Biological female 

  • 21-29 years old 

  • At least a high school education 

  • Fluency in English 

  • Drink alcohol regularly

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Current pregnancy  

  • Lifetime history of psychosis
