The ADAPT-GH Study
Purpose
This study will develop and test a culturally adapted meal plan consistent with the DASH eating pattern to improve blood pressure and heart health among Ghanaian adults with elevated BP.
We hypothesize that adapting a traditional DASH eating pattern to fit the preferences of first-generation Ghanaian immigrant adults, and using a meal plan schedule, shopping list, nutrition education, and remote patient monitoring, will produce improvements in blood pressure and heart health when compared to the traditional DASH eating pattern.
Participants in this study will be involved in one of two parts.
The first part of the study involves group discussion. Using co-design sessions, we will collect information on the nutrition-related experiences, dietary preferences, challenges and facilitators of culture-aligned healthy eating in 15 Ghanaian adults to improve their blood pressure and heart health. We will use the information from these sessions to construct a DASH meal plan that is culturally adapted for the Ghanaian diet. Participation in this part of the study will last a total of 4 weeks, and includes 1 virtual session, with 3 following sessions either virtually or in-person at OSU Wexner Medical Center approved locations. Participants will receive a $25 Kroger gift card for each session attended.
To participate in this part of the study, you must be:
- A first-generation or second-generation Ghanaian Immigrant
- 18 years or older
- Residing in or near Columbus, Ohio
- English speaking
The second part of the study will use a randomized controlled trial to randomly assign 40 adults with elevated blood pressure or hypertension to one of two arms: the culturally adapted DASH meal plan arm or the traditional DASH meal plan arm. Participation in this part of the study will last a total of 20 weeks, and includes 3 in-person lab visits and a follow up, following a meal plan with associated shopping list, taking part in at home blood pressure and weight monitoring, and watching educational nutrition videos. Participants will receive a $25 Kroger gift card for each lab visit attended.
To participate in this part of the study, you must be:
- A first-generation or second-generation Ghanaian Immigrant
- 18 years or older
- Residing in or near Columbus, Ohio
- English speaking
Participants involved in the first part of the study may choose whether they would like to participate in the second part.
